Decadent, Simple Chocolate Cake Recipe
Meet Nana! Nana (not Nona) is my great grandmother from the Italian side of my family.
She gave me wonderful memories of wisdom, the warmest smiles, and the MOST delicious food.
She always took great care in the handling and preparation of the meals that she made for us.
This never- fail chocolate cake recipe is one of hers that has been used by my family for four generations.
Nana moved on from her earthly form years ago, but her memory and connection remains in tact to us.
Through the years of lovely cooking and (sometimes with the help of my mother) carefully taking the time to write what was in her head down on paper for us to enjoy for.... eternity. :-)
The chocolate cake recipe is the second culinary endeavor I ever took after eggs.
(Third, if you count a crayon and candle scramble. :-D)
It is such a SIMPLE RECIPE!!!
the first and only time Nana wrote the recipe down
Ingredients:
1 egg
1/2 cup sour milk (add 1-1/4 tsp white vinegar to regular milk)
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup boiling water (add last)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
Grease 6x9 cake pan
(DO NOT COMBINE UNTIL LAST INGREDIENT IS ADDED)
Combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl until smooth
Poor mixture into greased 6x9 cake pan
Put cake pan on center rack of oven
Bake for approximately 40 minutes
Let cool for about an hour
This is the simplicity that I love so much about the recipe.
There are no complicated steps.
You just combine all ingredients in one bowl until no lumps are present!!!
I have many fond memories of this decadent chocolate cake recipe being used.
One of which is my mother crying on her 40th birthday.
I got up early that morning and made her this chocolate cake.
It had an "over the hill" graveyard theme.
At the time I was 11 years old and did not think about any reaction possibility other than birthday excitement.
She woke up, teared up, and went back to bed.
As awful as the story might sound it is still a funny, fond memory for us, and an example of this never-fail chocolate cake recipe connecting us through the years.
LMAO!!! poor Mom :-/
I hope you find the recipe useful and it finds its way into yours as it has ours.
